They each gave the other the contact information of five close friends and family members who agreed to act as mediators. In this way each artist gained access to the private life of the other as they used the mediators to execute scripted actions, called events. The work was an attempt to insert romanticism into daily life and to fictionalize chance in the world. The paper arrived at the gallery entirely black. At the start of the exhibition it bore only a few fingerprints, a result of adhering the piece to the wall. Five weeks later the work appeared as pictured, a record of its own existence over time. Soot had travelled throughout the gallery and down the stairs; while outside forces imposed upon the drawing, it, in turn, infiltrated the space beyond its borders.
